Inner City Kids! Gotta Love Them!
And I do! With all my heart. And I want to give them the best education there is. I currently teach 5th grade at a Los Angeles Inner City School. We are a Title I, low achieving school, and every student here is in the free lunch program. In addition to this, over 80% of our students are English Language Learners and 97% of our population is Hispanic. We have a high percentage of special education students placed in the general education setting.
I have looped with my kids, meaning that I was their teacher last year in 4th. They are the sweetest and smartest kids I've ever had in the ten years I have been teaching. Unfortunately, due to budget cutbacks in our district I cannot provide them with a comfortable environment where they can enjoy independent reading and writing. In addition to this, our school library is no longer open and my children are not able to to find a literacy haven there. It is not uncommon for my students to go home and have to share their one bedroom apartments or homes with 6 to 10 other relatives. Because of this, finding a private and quiet space to read and write is difficult.
Having relaxing library furniture, such as giant pillows and ball chairs, will allow my children to have that quiet haven for them to read and write. It will be their sanctuary away from their crowded homes and apartments where they know they can lose themselves in a book or in a personal narrative they are currently writing. Having these amenities will show my students that what they see as the difficult and arduous tasks of independent reading and writing doesn't have to be regarded as that in a calm, restful and inviting, furnished, library environment
Your donation will not be in vain! You in fact will be helping some of the neediest children in the city of Los Angeles! My students are not only financially challenged but also have emotional and psychological setbacks that I, as a teacher, can, maybe for a few hours a day, help them forget by providing them with a haven that allows them to be children where they can enjoy reading and writing - where they can be themselves.
