Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Improved social skills, oral language development, and friendships are just some of the many reasons I want a wooden doll-size dream house for my young learners.
I teach 21 curious and creative kindergartners at a high-performing urban charter school in Central Falls, RI. Half of my students are English language learners who deserve enriching opportunities to develop their ability to speak English. All of my students need more opportunities to play, and develop their social skills so that they can be better friends and community members.
Shortly after my twenty-one students arrive each morning they engage in social play, art, building, writing, literacy and math activities at a variety of centers. This center time is not only a fun and calm way to begin our day, but provides many opportunities for my students to grow. While engaged in centers my kindergartners learn to solve conflicts, negotiate, and build our classroom community.
I would like to provide more opportunities for pretend play by providing a wooden doll house with people and furniture. I envision rich oral language developing as fluent English speakers engage with beginning English speakers. All of my students will strengthen their social skills as they role-play scenarios from their own lives with their classmates. Although a wooden play house may seem typical, many of my students do not have such toys at home.
