This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Been to a bookstore? Most of my students have not. My goal is to provide my students the opportunity to browse the books in their classroom bookstore using their very own curiosity as currency.

I have a group of second and third graders that love to read!

They attend a public inner city school in California. Many of them have never visited the neighborhood public library and the only opportunity they have to read is in our classroom. One third of my students are reading far below grade level. Because they are struggling, reading can sometimes be a turn-off. All of my students deserve a special place in our classroom where they can have easy access to books they can read.

My Project

This project will allow my students easy access to the leveled reading books in our classroom. Since we have limited space, this portable storage unit and bins will allow students to comfortably "shop" and store books. It will further entice my students to read!

I want to get books in the hands of students!

This project allows students to self-select books they want to read. It will show students how inviting books are by providing a sturdy, colorful storage area. Currently my students "shop" for books that are stored in brown cardboard boxes that fall apart when the brass fasteners fall out. The cardboard boxes are stored in old, drab looking bookcases. This project will show students that books are precious and deserve a special place to live.
