Every day, we encourage our students to try to be flexible thinkers. We ask them to take turns, compromise and be patient. I would like all of our early childhood special education classroom to be equally as flexible; cultivating a comfortable learning environment that meets the varying needs of all of our young learners. Offering flexible seating and alternative furniture options in our classrooms will help personalize the learning experience for each of our students, offering them the choice of where and how they learn best.
Flexible seating gives students an alternative option to a traditional table and chair set up, which is often problematic for our young earners with attention deficits and sensory needs.
Flexible seating options allow students to wobble, rock, bounce and lean so they can be alert and focused. They also provide the sensory input our learners need to help focus and process information. For example, wobbly stools are a comfortable option for those students who need to move their bodies. With a wobbly stool, students can have a way of movement within the classroom that helps them maintain their focus and complete their work, while not distracting their peers by disrupting classroom lessons.
The lap desks will allow for another comfortable seating option that can help support our learners’ core development. These lightweight desks can easily be used in many areas of our classrooms and will help students focus and stay on task because they have decided to choose what feels right for them and their learning style.
