Wanted: A Differentiated Classroom

My students need 20 copies of each of 4 books titled, "Call It Courage," "Words By Heart&quot," "Year of Impossible Goodbyes&quot," and "Taking Sides."

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ferrel's classroom raised $568

This project is fully funded

I teach Science and Language Arts to a terrific group of 4th graders. They have all been identified as gifted and are in a self-contained gifted class. These children come from all over the city with varying backgrounds.

Imagine teaching a classroom full of gifted students and using a regular curriculum that is not differentiated for gifted students. That is exactly what I do! However, I would like to change that!! My students need more challenging reading material that will allow them to work to their potential. My students are bored with the current reading selections that are on grade level. Most of my students read at least 3 levels ahead. Gifted students crave challenges!! I would love for my students to be engaged in a curriculum that they are excited about and that leaves them wanting more.

I have found a curriculum that has won an award for "Outstanding Curriculum" by the National Association for Gifted Children. The curriculum calls for several novels to be used by the students. The literature selections will serve as a basis for discussion. The students will engage in literary response and persuasive writing activities. Grammar, vocabulary, reasoning, and research will also be embedded within the selections. Each skill taught will be geared toward the gifted learner.

By choosing to donate to this project, you will help provide my students with a true gifted education that they deserve. The supplies donated will be used year after year -- not just by one class. When students are challenged and engaged in a meaningful curriculum, they get excited about school and want more! You can help my students this school year, as well as each succeeding year, achieve this.
