This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Library pockets and card files were replaced by computers in public library checkout systems years ago. Having 30 first graders use this antiquated system is chaotic on a good day. With an improved classroom library checkout system, we can spend less time checking out books and more time reading!
I have the privilege of teaching 30 first graders in an inner-city school in Illinois.
All of my students are low-income, and most are English Language Learners. Despite issues of crime and poverty in their community, my students are excited to come to school to learn, and they LOVE to read!
My Project
I have spent a great deal of time and money to create a well-stocked classroom library for my young readers. We currently use index cards and library pockets as our book checkout system, which often results in students spending more time writing down titles of the books they check out each week than actually reading. We can increase reading time and minimize misplaced or lost books with a better checkout system.
IntelliScanners are similar to public library book scanners, but on a much smaller level. Books can be scanned and sorted by topic, genre, and other features. Students can use the IntelliScanner to check out books, set up reminders for book due dates, and send out notices for books being returned late.
Bringing an IntelliScanner system to our classroom would improve student responsibility and accountability for the book checkout process. Additional bar code labels will enable students to check out other media, such as educational DVDs or games.
Maintaining an organized classroom library is a complex and time-consuming task, but it doesn't have to be!
Your donation of an Intelliscanner and bar code labels will help organize books and other media for my young readers.
