This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in New York. My school is in a low income community and a lot of the families live in nearby shelters.
Many of my students are living below the poverty level. They don't have books or computers at home. Sadly some of my students have never ventured outside of their neighborhood.
I would like to have individual cassette players to use in a listening center so that my students can listen to books and songs on tape. This will help them with their fluency and also promote a love of reading and books. Most of my students have Spanish speaking parents and some are illiterate and can't read to them. With these cassette players that can have books read to them to build their skills. I would also like a cassette/CD player for the class to play educational songs for my students, to do movement activities, and introduce a more active and fun way to learn. During writing time my students like to hear soothing music while they write. My school has undergone many budget cuts and can't afford to buy a new listening center for me. The one that I had got stolen over the Christmas break and my students were heart broken because they could not listen to their favorite stories on tape. I have wonderful Cd's of songs and rhymes and educational games that I have not been able to expose my students to because I don't have the necessary resources.
Your donation will help my students to get a listening center that will get them excited about reading books. They will be able to build their phonics and spelling skills by listening to songs and rhymes, they will become more fluent by listening to a fluent reader read a book to them. With your help I can make learning and reading more exciting for my first graders
