My students need 6 hand held GPS's, one per team, in order to navigate to historical reference points.

My Students
My biggest challenge is students believe that history is only found in dusty textbooks. Through the use of GPS technology we can go out into the real world and locate and learn about historical places and see how geography played a role in determining historical events.
Many of my students come from challenging backgrounds where they have not been able to perform well in a typical school environment.
However, they are still curious about the world outside of the school building and are willing to explore and learn in novel and exciting ways.
My Project
The GPS's will serve as a springboard for technology, geography, and historical lessons. Students will learn how to input teacher given coordinates into the units. Next a historical question sheet will be generated based on the entered coodinates by the teacher. Then students and teachers will go to the area near the coordinates where the students, using the GPS's, will go and find the historical locations and answer questions about the location they are visiting. This will take them to the actual places to learn about, not just read about them in books.
This project is unable to take place with out these donations due to the cost of the GPS's.
Once we have the GPS's, the students will see that history is not dead and found only in text books, but it is alive and active if you know where to look. They will be able to discover historical battle fields in parks where they play and that old house in the city that used to be a base for George Washington. History is alive and can be walked through, not just studied in a book.
