Walk Two Moons: Understanding Native American Impact on Wwii

Help me give my students the following resources to increase their context for the impact Native Americans had on WWII. We are requesting picture books to provide context for understanding Native American culture, treatment and contributions.

My Project

We have a highly inquisitive classroom composed of students from a variety of ethnicities and cultures. Our students seek to gain an understanding of many of the subjects we study, especially when it pertains to other cultures.

Our goal is to utilize the high level picture books and novels to create context for students in gaining clarity on Native American culture, treatment, and contributions.

The book, "Rough Faced Girl" is a Native American folktale that will allow students to connect to Native American heritage and culture. The story is similar to the modern day Cinderella but contains elements that emphasize and distinguish attributes unique to Native American culture.

The next book, "I am Not a Number" will help students gain an understanding of the mistreatment of Native Americans and the battle to preserve their culture despite the strong push of assimilation.

"Chester Nez and the Unbreakable Code" is a book that will allow students to experience the process of becoming a Code Talker and the significance of the Native American language in being a critical element in changing the tide of WWII in the Pacific. The advantage of having an "unbreakable code" provided the US with the leverage it needed to eventually win the war.

The final book, "Walk Two Moons" is a novel that students will read with a broader scope of understanding Native American culture. This deeper understanding will gain students the ability to understand references, allusions, and motifs that may otherwise be looked over without the proper context.

In all, we are aiming to gain clarity and understanding, as well as learning acceptance and tolerance of a culture different than our own by "walking two moons in someone else's moccasins."
