"I just don't like to read."
I cannot tell you how many times my students have said something like the quote above to me. My heart breaks a little each time I hear it, but I am comforted by a simple truth. All students will like to read if the subject is interesting. Every student who has ever said that to me has finished at least one book they really liked. The solution is easy: find books that students WANT to read!
As an 11th and 12th grade English teacher, I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SATs and rigorous state test this year. This will aid them in the college admission process while simultaneously helping them gain the skills they need to succeed in college.
Studies have proven that the best way to improve student reading levels is to READ. This research and the success of former students is the reason students spend class time every day reading. As I aim to start the school year, I just completed an inventory of my classroom library. I know my students are motivated and committed, but they desperately need books that will keep them interested in reading.
Students have requested this list of thirty five books by authors Sharon Draper, Sarah Dessen, and Melvin Burgess. In the past, books by these authors have waiting lists in my classroom. Students tell each other to "hurry up!" so they can read the book next. These donated books will help students raise their reading level while engaging their interests, which will motivate them to read more.
This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance to realize that teenagers throughout history have felt just as they do. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard.
Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
