Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's amazing how much people can learn when they're having a good time.
I teach 5th grade math in an inner-city charter middle school in a high-need area. Over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch according to their household incomes. My students enter 5th grade with widely varying previous experiences. Some were in challenging academic environments, but most enter 5th grade well below grade level.
Because of the great disparity between the basic math skills of my highest-performing and lowest-performing students, it is always a challenge to motivate all students sufficiently to practice and improve their skills. And unfortunately, the most effective means of practicing such skills has always been piles upon piles of worksheets and practice problems.
This does not have to be the case! With 12-sided dice, games like 24 and Roll 'N' Multiply, and Roll 'N' Divide, kids have fun playing and get tons of practice with math facts and logic. A few minutes of playing games can give twice the number of repetitions as a worksheet in half the time, with a million times the fun! How's that for a math problem?
I am requesting 12-sided and standard 6-sided number dice, Roll 'N' Multiply and Roll 'N' Divide games, The 24 card game, and bins to store these materials. These games will allow students to have fun while gaining much-needed practice time with basic facts.
You will help my children overcome their skills deficit by motivating them to practice, practice, and practice some more! Your support will help my students and me to put away the old skill and drill worksheets and put some fun back into skills time. Thank you for your help!
