This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had an 8 year old ask you how many toes were on their feet? My students need hands-on math games to help make math make sense.
I teach in an urban Title I school in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
Of my 20 students, 15 are Hispanic, 3 are black, and 1 is a Asian American. 16 are English Language Learners, 16 are on free or reduced lunch, and 6 are in the special education program. Most of my students arrived in my classroom due to the dedication and determination of their parents to provide them with a sound and safe education. My students’ parents are as involved as they can be, but due to extreme generational poverty, they are often unable to provide their children with the same level of school readiness that many children across the country receive.
My Project
Your donations will help my students understand math in a way that makes sense to them. Many of my students lack basic number sense. They recognize numbers. They can tell you some math facts. But at the end of the day, the numbers are just numbers. These math games and math centers will help my students develop number sense and truly understand math in a more concrete manner.
The Lakeshore math games and centers are not only educational, but they are fun! Who needs a worksheet when you can use games, stamps, or Hot Dot pens? My students will be so excited to "play" with the games that they won't even realize they are learning!
Math is all around us, yet it is one of the subjects that brings out the most emotions - either you hate it or you love it.
I want my kids to LOVE math. When an 8 year old does not know how many toes are on their feet without taking off their shoes, we have a problem. Help me and my students experience the fun and the practicality of math with these math games from Lakeshore!
