Vroom Vroom Car Math

Help me give my students a balsa wood car kit to make and race. Along the way learning craftsmanship, speed, distance and time.

My Project

When students are invested in a project that they are able to compare their own personal experiences with the real world around them, their learning occurs organically. There is actual long term retention of concepts.

For this project I will have students design and build their own balsa wood racing car.

Next each student will have the opportunity to explore possible ways to make their car go faster. Finally each student will race their car against their classmates.

Through this educational opportunity students will demonstrate basic woodworking skills and also learn math concepts such as measurement , geometry and basic calculations. They will calculate average speed, distance and time meanwhile enhancing their arithmetic skills.

These are all concepts students have a difficult time retaining when learning by the paper pencil memorization way of teaching.

My students will be able to transfer their newfound learning to the standardized tests they take at the end of the year.

This learning opportunity will be remembered over their lifetime.
