Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students are amazing! Even though they face many challenges due to their low socioeconomic status, every day they maintain the desire to learn. They are active and growing young learners with lots of hopes and dreams. By giving them the proper support and caring learning environment, all students are learning and growing, regardless of their individual situations.
During this uncertain time in history, my students need to be able to remain active and feel like they can contribute to their community.
My Project
My middle school students are at the perfect age to dive deep and experience the democratic process for themselves. We will explore the voting process through books and videos. Students will create their own online platforms based on what they believe their school, county, or nation needs.
They will create campaign posters and even write argumentative speeches before finally holding a mock election by mail.
Students should always be given choices, therefore, students will have the option to create their campaign posters using chart paper, posterboard, or digitally with the laptop through google drawings or other apps. Students will try to convince their peers to vote for the during our campaign speeches. We will finally hold a mock election by using postcards to mail in our votes for our chosen candidates.
This project will not only teach them about the democratic process but also how to write a persuasive speech. Adding in the creativity of creating campaign posters with a variety of digital tools that are available, this will help my students feel as if they are trying to get elected. Students will gain a deep understanding of the democratic process and the importance of each stage of the election cycle, but most importantly that citizens must vote to have their voices heard. I can't wait to begin this project with my kiddos!
