This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you vote in the last election? Well, students in my school did. They chose a student president and student vice president for the school! Our student-run organizations and clubs need help. They need books and materials that help give back to and learn about their community.

Our school is located in New York.

Our 32 classroom teachers educate nearly 680 students from Pre-K to 5th grade. The cultural make-up of our school is as follows: 86% Latino (Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Ecuador), 10% are African or African-American; and 4% are Asian or Polish. 96% of all students receive free or reduced lunch and come from low income homes. More than half of our students are part of after-school programs that allow them to be active, express themselves on stage, or develop their skills in reading and math. During the 2009-2010 school year, Chancellor Joel Klein and the Department of Education awarded our school with an “A” letter grade for the quality education we have given our students.

My Project

I am the adviser of three student-run organizations/clubs. Your donations will support students who enjoy being part of groups that support their interests. Many of our students are very talented artists. Budgets for art programs have been cut and without art books and materials for our student-run Art Club, those students will not have any opportunities to learn techniques that support their skills. These young artists need scissors, drawing paper and art books. Our Student Government and Honor Society need resources to help them learn how to be good citizens. Each year these students combine their talents to support or local Veterans Hospitals. Books about citizenship and a set of flash-drives will support these students in learning what it means to be good citizens.

Many of the students that attend my school were not born in this country and want to be great citizens.

Through your donations, students involved in organizations and clubs that promote volunteerism will be supported.
