This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want to realize their dreams, and the best way for me to ensure their dreams are met is to make them literate readers by the end of the year. My goal is to have EVERY one of them reading on grade level by the end of the year. "A DREAM is a book you can hold in your hand." by Neil Gaim

I have two amazing 1st grade classes which means that I have 40 students in all and 67% of my students are English Language Learners.

All of my students want to become great readers, but they have many challenges that make it difficult for them to read. Most students do not have an English speaking parent to help them read at home. I believe that all of my students can be voracious readers by the end of 1st grade. The reading program I would like to put into place in my classroom recommends a library of 1,000 books or more. Research shows that by increasing the opportunities for students to read will increase their reading ability as well as get them interested in reading by finding books that they want to read. I know I will be able to have all my students reading on grade level at the end of the year if I have the books for a classroom library. My students come from very poor backgrounds and do not have the resources to purchase books at home, so I need to provide them at school.

My Project

The books will be used in my classroom for students to read everyday. These books will be available in "book bins" for students to read and increase their reading ability through our daily instruction. Students will learn different strategies for reading while using these books. I will be teaching students how to pick a "good fit" book for them as individual readers so that they are being used as efficiently as possible. The reason that a 1,000 book classroom library is important is because the students will choose their own books to read. By giving students the freedom to choose what they read, and the skill to find a book that is beneficial to them, will make reading enjoyable and help them become lifelong readers. This is help all of my at-risk student population to become fluent readers and develop a love for reading which will help them in their educational life for years to come.

Reading is so important for my students to be able to learn and function in our society for the rest of their lives.

I want them to have the best life possible, and I know if I can give them a solid foundation for reading, that they will be able to make their dreams come true. These children come from homes that do not have the resources available to accomplish this goal. My goal for this project is to create an environment in my room where I give them the best opportunity for future success.
