This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I've got 36 active and energetic learners who love learning about the world around them! We are located in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, and we have a small, but very diverse population.
My class is filled with dreamers and builders!
Our school's focus is on integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM), which fits in perfectly with what our class loves to do. My students get excited about learning and creating and my job is to help them dream big and reach their goals.
My Project
I currently have a classroom of advanced readers whose needs are not being met by our reading series. While our school library has some excellent sets, there aren't enough titles for us to get through the whole year.
My goal is to show them the value of classic literature.
When most of them want to read Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (not that there's anything wrong with that), I want them to learn appreciation for the written word by reading books with rich imagery and more complex characters. I want to offer them a classroom set of the novel, "Island of the Blue Dolphins". Hopefully, by challenging themselves, they'll love reading even more!
