My brilliant third graders are enthusiastic readers, hungry for more challenging books! In a struggling public school where low expectations permeate our environment, my class is determined to work relentlessly to meet our big goal: we will all grow 1.5 years as readers!
One of my biggest challenges as a teacher is figuring out how to differentiate instruction to accommodate readers on a wide range of levels.
Our classroom library does not have enough books to inspire and challenge all of my enthusiastic young readers. My kids need access to engaging nonfiction and fiction texts in order to master the Common Core standards and meet their full potential as readers.
My Project
In order to meet the new challenges of the Common Core standards, my kids need the opportunity to read nonfiction texts (at least 50%). As English Language Learners, many of my kids already see reading as an unpleasant task. My goal is to make reading fun by providing more interesting reading materials and encouraging independent reading both at school and at home. As part of the Expeditionary Learning English Language Arts curriculum, we've been learning all about the power of reading and why it is a valuable skill. My students are experts about the various obstacles that prevent people in different parts of the world from accessing books, and the great lengths people go to in pursuit of the power of reading. I'm watching my students blossom into insatiable, determined reading right before my eyes! Having engaging new books will motivate them even further!
These new books will enrich our classroom and support us in reaching our big goal!
I am convinced that when given the opportunity, my amazing kids can and will be extremely successful! Your help will ensure that my students reach their fullest potential as growing readers. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
