Volume In The Wild (Using Integration in the Real World)

Help me give my students a classroom set of Calculus-specific calculators so they can do difficult volume calculations out in the world!

My Project

Students will be venturing into the real world to find objects to use in volume calculations using the tool of integration. After learning about the shell and disc method for determining volume, we will be visiting local pottery shops and using our tools to identify particular pots that we know (through Calculus) hold the amount of volume required. Students will then be constructing their own 3 dimensional solids to laser cut and test their volume calculations.

Once students understand the intellectual tools of Calculus, it is important that they practice using the physical tools that streamline their calculations.

In my class, we spend the first half of the year specifically working without calculators to build student numeracy and helping them improve their ability to "sniff-test" their own work for accuracy. Once they feel confident with the processes of differentiation and integration, I want to give them the tools that allow them to quickly do calculations using them.

These calculators will have a major impact on many of my lower confidence math students who tend to make calculation errors, despite understanding the concepts. I purposely curate our work in the early part of the year to be less calculation intense and instead focus on core concepts and solidifying smaller scale numeracy (1-100 multiplication tables, percent-decimal-fraction conversions, etc.) that is more frequent in every day life. Having calculators specifically geared towards our Calculus work helps them explore more freely because they understand what the calculator is doing and it isn't some black box that just spits out an answer.
