This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our student athletes are incredibly hardworking and grateful for the opportunity to participate in team sports at the middle school level. The school is located in a culturally diverse area with roughly 70% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. For many of the students, this is their only first and potentially only opportunity to participate in a sport and be a member of a team. On top of attending games and practices, our players must maintain a high GPA, high citizenship grade, and be free of major attendance issues. Being a part of the team has helped motivate many of them to keep up their grades and stay out of trouble. Past students, many of whom had never played volleyball until joining our team, have gone on to try out for and make the high school volleyball team.
My Project
Our girls volleyball program gives students an opportunity to participate in an organized team sport at the middle school level and learn the importance of teamwork and perseverance. Many of the students on our team are discovering the game for the first time. Without our program, many of these students would not have the opportunity to try out the game or play in an organized league. We have two teams: one for more experienced players and one where players of all skill levels are welcome. We compete against other schools in our league.
In addition to volleyball skills, our players learn the importance of teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and school pride.
We also require students to maintain a minimum grade point average as well as have a record clear of discipline and attendance issues. Many of our players have gone on to participate in volleyball and other sports at the high school level due to discovering their love of sport on our team.
Unlike high school sports programs, our middle school program receives minimal funding and does not have a booster club. Last season, we started with only 4 balls to use between 2 teams. Your support would allow us to purchase more competition quality balls for both practice and gameday. Additionally, the ball cart would help improve our practices as it means no more chasing balls around the court.
