Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a low-income public elementary school in Los Angeles.
My students are smart, funny, kind, and have wonderful hearts.
In my classroom, it is incredibly important for them to have positive experiences that will influence the way they look at themselves, treat others, and develop a growth mindset for taking risks and learning. Many of my students face great challenges outside of school that they can't control. But what they can control is the learning and how they will succeed through hard work and determination. Even though they have challenges outside my classroom, they always bring their enthusiasm to learn and their drive to do better.
My Project
I love playing volleyball, and I want my students to love it too. Unfortunately, it's hard for them to learn the game, when we have 1 ball for my entire class. Many of my students have expressed great interest in learning the sport, but I need the equipment to be able to properly teach my students how to bump, set, and spike.
One ball for 24 kids isn't going to cut it if they're truly going to learn the game.
With more balls, electric pumps for kids to pump the balls, and some nets, I can have multiple courts of kids practicing skills. When it's time to really play, I won't need to teach the skills the first time they touch the ball on the court. Just thinking about them learning to play makes me so excited for them!
