The novel “Out of My Mind” not only captivates young readers with its heartfelt story of resilience and empathy, but it will be a good fit to align my instruction to Florida B.E.S.T. standards for reading.
Students can examine how Melody’s point of view shapes the story and how Draper uses her voice to highlight disability awareness.
Florida BEST standard: ELA.4.R.1.3 – Describe how an author develops a character’s perspective.
I will be using the book for a focused novel study that strengthens comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills while fostering inclusive discussions around disability and perseverance.
