This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help us empower our middle school students to speak out and share their community’s untold stories through podcasting! Our school, located in an inner-city neighborhood where more than 50% of the population is Latino and low-income, is filled with creative, bright students eager to make an impact. This project will raise awareness about representation, identity, and cultural pride while fostering connections within their community.

Our students want to reclaim their narratives while challenging stereotypes that often paint painful and poignant pictures of who and what they represent.

By creating podcasts, they will share their voices and the experiences of their Latino community, ensuring others don’t define who they are or what they stand for. Through their podcasts, students will dismantle negative stereotypes by highlighting untold stories, celebrating their heritage, and showcasing the resilience and contributions of their community. Additionally, in alignment with an upcoming interdisciplinary learning expedition, sixth graders will explore essential questions like “Who writes history?” and “Who tells your story?” Moreover, students will interview family members, local business owners, and community leaders to highlight overlooked voices, celebrate heritage, and unpack representation. Their podcasts will amplify community heroes and form the foundation of an Oral History Archive for our school’s website.

With the requested materials, students will produce professional-quality podcasts, energizing the community to reflect, connect, and take action. These tools—including microphones, headphones, audio mixers, portable recorders, pop filters, and isolation shields—are essential for creating impactful episodes. Pencils and journals will help students plan episodes, script interviews, and reflect on their creative process. Students will also gain vital skills in public speaking, collaboration, and media production, fostering pride and belonging while inspiring others to engage with their stories.
