Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a fourth-grade bilingual teacher at an Equity Focus School, I’m always looking for ways to help my students use their language skills to make a real impact. This project empowers them to become authors, illustrators, and mentors by creating original bilingual books and read-alouds to support early readers in our school community.

Students will work in pairs or small groups to write and illustrate short stories in both English and Spanish.

Once completed, they’ll record themselves reading the stories aloud and compile a digital library that can be shared with younger students in our lower grades. These student-created resources will be used in buddy reading sessions, listening centers, and even shared with families who speak Spanish at home.

This project serves two communities: younger students in our school and multilingual families. Many of our younger learners are just beginning their literacy journey, and hearing stories read by older peers—especially in their home language—can help boost confidence and connection. At the same time, my fourth graders gain leadership experience and pride in their bilingualism.

We are requesting an iPad to support the creation of these stories. It will be used for writing, illustrating, recording audio, and editing content into digital formats. It gives students the freedom to bring their ideas to life in an engaging, tech-savvy way.

This project supports the "Boost Literacy" goal of the Allstate Foundation’s Service Stars program. With your help, my students won’t just be improving their own literacy—they’ll be building a bridge of learning and language across our school.
