This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sports, romance, and iPhones are the issues that daily plague my students. Rarely do they get to hear the voices of young people facing more serious problems in the world; life and death problems that they know very little about.

The high school students I teach live in an urban environment and attend a school that has very little funding to give them experiences outside of the textbook.

Regardless, they are eager to learn more about the world outside of the city that many of them rarely get to leave. They have a constant string of questions about the people and places they study in my world history class.

My Project

I am requesting 40 copies of the book "A Long Way Gone," by Ishmael Beah, which is a young teen's account of atrocities that he was forced to live through in Sierra Leone during the 1990s. Upon reading this book my students will be awakened from the lure of popular culture and realize the seriousness of the problems facing our world. It will also increase their appreciation for all of the opportunities they have that many young adults never experience.

The message that this book offers is priceless.

It will open the minds and hearts of my students to a world that they don't know exists and it will force them to challenge themselves in new ways.
