My Students
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire". I don’t want to just teach my students a bunch of facts. I want them to develop a passion for learning and a desire to pursue their interest. I used excerpts from this book in the past and my students were captivated.
I have been a teacher for a number of years but I recently changed schools and am now working in an urban school.
I have a classroom set of textbooks that are “a mile wide and an inch deep.” I spend a lot of time trying to find supplementals to use with my lessons and find ways to teach outside of the textbook. This is a struggle when I do not have access to any additional resources; like additional books, computers and Internet for student use and I am even limited to the number of photocopies I am permitted to make. Due to this, I feel I am limited in what I can do and my students are limited in what they can learn.
My Project
I plan on using this book in class to supplement our study of American History. This book fills in a lot of the gaps that exist in our school textbooks and give a perspective on history that has often been missing in textbooks and curriculum. We will read and discuss the book together as a class. The students will then have creative activities and a summative project to complete.
This project will make a difference because I know my students will find this book to be engaging and interesting.
I have used excerpts from it in the past and my students were captivated by it because it offers a perspective that they are not use to hearing. It is not a “traditional” history book. It allows my students to look at our past in a more critical manner and re-evaluate our nation's past and present.
