Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading comprehension and vocabulary instruction are strongly correlated. Researchers have found that word knowledge in primary school can predict how well students are able to comprehend at the high school level. Students come to school with a wide range of vocabularies. This occurs in part because of the differences in number of words students are exposed to at home. The project "Vocabulary Power," is a fun and exciting way to teach new vocabulary words to students. Through this approach, direct instruction is provided to students in the forms of games and active participation in addition to explicit teaching of words in context through written and visual resources.
"Vocabulary Power," enables students to be exposed to new words repeatedly enabling them to accumulate new meanings of words gradually. The more exposure students have to the word, the more likely they will be to define, comprehend and remember it. With the requested game show and quiz cards, students will have the opportunity to earn points for using vocabulary strategies to define different words and earn prizes, therefore, making learning fun. Through the requested word of the week chart, students will be introduced to a new word each week and be able to use it in a wide variety of settings.
Vocabulary growth is a long process and the materials asked for in this proposal will help make learning new vocabulary words fun and exciting.
