Vocabulary Flippers!

My students need 120 binder rings and 120 packs of multi-colored index cards to create their own take-with-you vocabulary flipper that will reinforce spelling, vocabulary, and parts of speech for Spanish class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This proposal is to support two very high poverty and violent neighborhood schools in close proximity to each other. I have 117 students ranging from 5th grade to 8th grade. One school is a magnet school that has an emphasis on democratic citizenship, and the other is a neighborhood k-8 with a booming bilingual program (English Language Learners transitioning into English-only).

I do not see my students at the magnet school every day because of scheduling and budget cuts in the district's world languages department. The neighborhood school has been failing for 8 years, and even its booming bilingual program (transitioning English Language Learners to English-only classrooms) has not been able to support students long/well enough for them to function. It is my first year at these schools, and Spanish is often fluffed off because of my itinerant schedule and newbie status, so supplies (as basic as copy paper and enough seats) are no where in sight.

I think that allowing each of my students to make their own vocabulary flipper (hole punch index cards and attach them to the binder ring) will assist them on multiple levels. Overall, it will empower students to study anywhere and anytime, especially since resources are very bare-bone in this high-poverty neighborhood. They will be color-coded for part of speech in order to help remediate their lack of foundational grammar structures. Students will get to put some of their own words in them in order to inspire their curiosity. At the neighborhood school, the majority of my students can speak Spanish but have not acquired any reading/writing skills. They can use this opportunity to work on spelling and reading/writing in both languages. At the magnet school, I do not see all of my students every day because of budget cuts on the district level, so this will allow for us to cover more material while we are actually in class.

You can have a profound affect on 117 middle school students' development of reading and writing skills (especially spelling and connecting phonetics to text). In an increasingly global society, their Spanish background is a huge strength that you can build up by helping them to develop their written skills (which are critical to Spanish as a job skill).
