Vivacious Elementary Orchestra Students Need 14 Inch Violas

My students need two 14 inch violas. A boom in enrollment left us short on violas. The new violas would enable more students to learn to play the viola.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Miyamoto's classroom raised $534

My Students

Our young, public school elementary school orchestra is quickly growing. This is the third year of our program and we grew from approximately 40 students in the first year to over 100 students this year. We are currently short on violas and more students want to learn to play.

We are a public elementary school full orchestra in the state of Hawaii.

We proudly serve an approximately 50% military population. Our students are energetic, enthusiastic, and love to play instruments. They are hungry to learn music. Many of our students are also economically disadvantaged and could not learn to play an orchestral instrument if it were not for generous donors and sponsors. In our first year, the orchestra received a "Superior Plus" rating at the Oahu Band Directors Association Parade of Bands. Last year, the orchestra received a rating of "Superior" at the Hawaii String Teachers Association Parade Of Orchestras. The students are making very good use of the instruments. They work hard and practice diligently.

My Project

The two 14 inch violas will serve the need of providing more students the opportunity to be able to play an orchestral instrument. The violas are needed to give the orchestra a balanced sound. Research has shown that young students who learn to play an instrument at an wary age have increased brain sizes in the cortical regions of the brain. Through MRI technology, studies show that reading music and playing a musical instrument activates the whole brain. Music makes students smarter.

Two 14 inch violas will enable our students the opportunity to play a musical instrument.

This will make it possible for students to play without having to share an instrument. We need more violas for a balanced orchestral sound. Research shows that playing a musical instrument does more for students than teach them music (which in and of itself is a rewarding and fulfilling experience), music enhances all areas of development. This will last for a lifetime. Aloha!
