This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Knowledge is power... Word knowledge, that is! Building vocabulary is an essential part of closing the achievement gap between English Language Learners and their English-only peers.

I teach in a very low-income community in northern Illinois.

All of my students receive free lunch, and most are English Language Learners who speak Spanish at home. Despite the many challenges the neighborhood and home lives present to my students, my 30 first graders are eager to learn, inquisitive, and fascinated by new experiences. We have daily read aloud time, during which we read picture and chapter books with interesting new words. These children need many exposures to rich vocabulary to be better readers and writers, and to be active participants in their learning of new words. However, we lack the materials to help students record and reflect on their vocabulary learning.

My Project

With your donation of a class set of vocabulary journals, my students will have the resources necessary to build their vocabularies. Each journal provides space for 120 vocabulary entries. Space is provided for students to record definitions, synonyms, pictures and sentences that use each new word and demonstrate knowledge of each word's meaning in a variety of ways. My young English Language Learners will especially benefit from drawing a picture to represent new vocabulary. Even after they leave our classroom and move on to second grade, my students will have a record of words they learned in first grade that can serve as a personal dictionary as they read texts in the future. Actively writing and drawing about vocabulary daily will give students the opportunity to really acquire essential vocabulary rather than simply memorizing a list of words.

By donating vocabulary journals to our class, you will empower students to learn a difficult language in greater depth.

My students just need a little extra support and encouragement to truly master the English language. These journals will improve not only vocabulary acquisition, but reading comprehension and writing as well. Thank you for your support!
