My Students

As a special subject teacher, I have known my upper elementary art students for close to eight years now, which is pretty unique, and one of the best parts about being my school's art teacher. Fostering an ongoing relationship with kids from year to year means that a genuine mutual trust can been formed, which leads to greater freedom in the classroom and the opportunity to develop meaningful units that showcase a student's developing technique and curiosity in a topic.

Students in grades 3-5 are given the opportunity to grapple with challenging content as a result of maturing throughout the course of their arts education.

A strong desire to create, paired with access to unique and quality materials to fulfill the ideas students imagine for themselves, sets students up for success and a joy for engaging in the process of art making.

My Project

Maury 4th and 5th graders will combine fashion and illustration as they draw influence from prolific Mexican artist and designer, Ilse Valfré.

By creating their own imaginative figures that express the playful tension of two opposing characteristic traits, much like Valfré's do, Maury artists will aim to design memorable images of mass appeal as they bring their ideas to life in the form of wearable art on t-shirts with Sharpies.

All month long, students will learn from a variety of enterprising, resilient, and dedicated contemporary Hispanic, Chicano/Chicana, Latino/Latina, and Latinx artists.
