This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students need the extra umph to keep them engaged and their spirits high about learning to read, write or do math. They light up when they are presented with interactive read-alouds or math concepts. They are instantly engaged and happy readers, writers and mathematicians.
I work at a school in a major metropolitan area that serves low income students.
My students with special needs are energetic, caring and most importantly want to learn and explore just like every other child. Many of my students are not afforded the opportunity to have technology at home and surplus is a rarity at our district schools. Many times my students get frustrated with work as they find it a bit more challenging but they automatically light up when concepts come to life through an LCD projector and the visuals capture their attention and keep them engaged. It is a precious moment when a student dislikes reading but forgets all about their struggles while reading along to Raz-Kids on an iPad. My responsibility as their teacher is to help them succeed not only in school but through life and give them strategies and tools that will keep them engaged and drive them to success.
My Project
I will use the projector during reading and math to explain concepts using BrainPop videos and other kid friendly sites to keep the students engaged. Many times, I will find very interactive sites that allow the students to remember concepts through dance or song. This also allows for many different opportunities to model concepts to students.
I will use the iPads during reading and math centers. During reading, the students can work on their fluency, accuracy, comprehension and decoding skills with the Raz-Kids app as well as many sight word apps that are interactive and very visual. During math, the students can work on their math skills with the IXL app or other math apps that help support skills they need help with.
The donations will help benefit my students' education and lives by providing them with necessary resources that allow them to adapt to a constant changing environment through technology.
The donations will make learning less of a struggle for my students and keep them more engaged and realize that learning can be fun!
