I teach 10th and 11th grade DC and US History in at a public charter high school in Washington, DC. All my students are African American and 95% of my students live in Wards 7 and 8. Unfortunately, these are the wards most affected by poverty and crime in the District. While the surrounding community is not always an ideal environment for our students, our school provides students with a safe environment and caring teachers that prepare them well for life after high school.
Social studies is a dynamic subject (or at least should be taught that way). There are so many relevant and current examples to pull into history, but these stimulating examples often get lost in history classes. My students are much more engaged when they SEE and EXPERIENCE periods in history rather than reading about the period in their textbooks. For example, I'd love to show movie clips, occasionally give PowerPoint presentations, show them how to do proper research online, show famous footage of the important moments in our nation's history, show famous speeches, show clips of interviews with people they are studying, etc. The list goes on and on. An LCD projector will allow me to do all of the above and will directly benefit students. Our school cannot afford LCD projectors for teachers, and unfortunately, the two that are on loan in our library are often unreliable.
A LCD projector for my US History and DC History students will greatly enhance classroom learning. The visual learners will get more out of the lessons if they are able to see the notes on the board or view movie clips of something they are studying. More importantly, ALL types of learners will benefit by seeing more visuals in the classroom.
Please make this dream a reality in my classroom. Your generous donation will truly make a huge impact on my students and how they view history. You will make it possible for my students to experience history in a much more personal and in-depth manner and make those connections between the past and the present that are so vital to understanding history.
