My Students

How will increasing the depth of rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents) using fraction circles for English Learners and Newcomer students impact student learning of mathematics?

Our middle school in Southern California has a large population of English Learners and Newcomer students who have been in the U.S.

less than a year who are having a hard time grasping mathematical concepts. Several of them come to us several grades behind due to the language barrier or have been out of school.

My Project

Because these students come to us with a language barrier, having them just take notes and show them examples isn't enough for mastery. They need visuals and hands on activities to have a deeper understanding. Fractions, decimals, and percents are a huge part of 6th grade mathematics. Having these fraction circles will give them a visual for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, comparing and ordering rational numbers. These specific fraction circles not only show the fraction representations, but also have percent and decimal on the back of them. We would use these daily as a whole class, group work, or small group instruction to reinforce rational number concepts.

Could you imagine taking a math class in another language that is not your primary and be expect to be proficient?

English Learners and Newcomer students have to work harder and something as little as these fraction circles will allow them to explore and show their reasoning. Math is so much more than procedural and drills. Visuals and manipulatives will take their learning to a higher and deeper level of understanding.
