My group of Kinders have bright hearts and eager minds! Just like our class chant says, "Nothing short of excellence, we give our all, we give our best!" There is a lot of learning happening at ages 5 to 6, and though there are many challenges, they persevere!
"Tiny but Mighty" is a motto in our Kindergarten, and I strive to find opportunities for them to show off their stuff and be seen as little leaders.
One challenge is living in a low-income/high poverty area. As a teacher, not only am I thinking of academic needs, but I am also constantly ensuring that students are fed, have proper clothing for the weather, and are getting extra love and positive attention. Though I can't control what is happening at home, I can make sure their school experience is rich and help them foster a love for learning and a love for themselves.
My Project
In my classroom, I receive beautiful, natural sunlight which, for the most part, is a feature I am grateful to have. However, when it comes to using technology and using our whiteboard/projector, it is very difficult to see, and at this point pretty much unusable. Even with all the blinds closed. Lights off. In the dead of winter. My students will ask me to please turn the lights off, stating they can't see. With that comes a realization that the lights are off (and have not been turned on all day) or my all too worn out phrase "I can't control the weather" is, yet again, repeated. My students are troopers and will go along with it, trying their best to see the faces of historical figures or the vibrant colors of a coral reef as I give a verbal play by play with "what is happening," or doing their best to follow along a writing sample.
My very old, worn out projector has been hard to see for the past 5 years, but that is 5 years too many; Our students deserve better, especially with 21st century learning!
We need a TV display so we can see much clearer any teacher modeling as well as student work. We would also be able to view educational videos and activities with true detail and color. The stand would make it possible to free up wall space and allow flexibility with where we need the display since we are constantly moving and grooving in our learning!
