Visually Appealing Anchor Charts for Learning English

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

By creating anchor charts that are bright and visual with plenty of color to stand out, this will be more appealing to students' eyes. Often, we use anchor charts in class to map out ideas, brainstorm, and summarize new content being learned. This can even include simple topics/units about basic vocabulary being learned. For example, when I taught about school supplies and places at school - I created an anchor chart for each topic with vocabulary words and pictures. Students also added what they thought the purpose of each was.

Students also post to our class anchor charts their own ideas either individually, in partners, or small groups to add to our whole class thoughts - this is great writing practice for my K-5 English Learners who can bounce ideas off their classmates and expand their knowledge as a class.

This helps add student inclusion in the classroom. They have a feeling of belonging and my groups of English Learners become a small family during our lessons together. An example of this is I created an anchor chart for Earth Day with headings of Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle. We discussed what these words meant and brainstormed ideas that fall into each category. Students added their own thoughts on post-it notes to our main classroom anchor chart.

We already create anchor charts in class, but I am out of my supplies to create them. I want to add more color and brighter visuals with pictures and words that stand out and are easy to follow for next year's anchor charts. This will aid in my student learning and better retention of material being taught. I am just trying to give my English Learners the best learning experience possible to learn our language and succeed in academics and everyday life in America.
