My Students

I teach first grade at an elementary school in South Philadelphia. My students enter the classroom each day excited to learn how to read, write, and for most-- speak English. They each have a heart of gold paired with motivation and determination to be the best that they can be.

Our school population is 100% economically disadvantaged and 40% English language learners.

Our students come from all over the world including Nepal, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Cambodia, Mexico, Malaysia, Uganda, Kenya, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Laos, and of course South Philadelphia. Our school provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich them academically and grow as positive social contributors in our world. Our parents are extremely supportive and involved in their child's education, although many of them do not speak English. We use extensive resources to communicate with our parents in their native language. Our parents and students aspire to succeed and achieve their goal of living the American Dream. Due to the School District of Philadelphia's financial crisis, all of our educational supplies, resources, and materials are either limited or non-existent.

My Project

Current best practices in teaching strongly suggest providing students with extensive visual support while introducing new topics to a group. A document camera would benefit my students tremendously, because I would be able to manipulate our hands on math materials for students while projecting it onto the white board, instead of trying to deliver the demonstrations to 26 students while all sitting in a circle on the carpet. Students are intrigued by use of technology and I strongly believe that technology such as this should be available in every classroom. A document camera provides hands on, real time directives and instruction for students and can be both visual as well as kinesthetic. It would be amazing to not have to worry about students who may not be able to see the modeling or guided lesson being
