Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my visual arts classroom have autism and cognitive impairments. Most of them are non-verbal. They visit me each day to engage with materials and to have tactile and sensory experiences.
Even though they may not have the words to express their feelings, I see the joy and enthusiasm they reveal as they build, paint, collage, and discover their own artistic potential.
My school is a high school in the NYC Dept. of Education's Special Education district. I believe I have the best job in the world. Working with my students is a truly fulfilling job, and I'm so glad I get to make art with them each day.
My Project
My students are non-verbal adolescent students with autism, and they are amazing artists. I have seen each one of them engage with materials ranging from sculpture and collage to painting and mixed media projects. They are creative individuals, and I intend to continue to develop their skills and talents by giving them opportunities to explore materials and processes in my visual arts classroom. Using silkscreens, I will be able to teach my students about some of the various techniques used in printmaking. They will also develop their acrylic and oil painting skills using easels that will provide them choices in how they want to work on some of their painting projects.
As non-verbal communicators, their art and their uses of color, form and individual style, allows them to express themselves daily.
I gather new understandings as each school year progresses and I am inspired by my students every day.
