Help me give my students sketchbooks to incorporate vocabulary, writing, and higher order thinking skills necessary for development and the creative process in Art Class .
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students love to learn! 98% of our students are Hispanic and Latinx representing over 30 different countries within the school population. A schoolwide program provides free breakfast and lunch for 100% of the students. Our school is located in Atlanta, GA. The majority of the school population speaks English as a second language.
My Project
Visual Verbal Journals, or sketchbooks, are integrated into the DCSD Fine Arts curriculum for grades K-5. Sketchbooks are used in Art class not only for brainstorming ideas and thumbnail sketching, but to support learning art vocabulary, practice writing skills, and incorporate higher order thinking skills.
Sketchbooks are a valuable tool when using the Engineering Design Process found in STEM and STEAM lessons and necessary for creating Art.
Students learn to ask, imagine, plan, create and then improve upon their own works of art. Sketchbooks support language acquisition and encourage students to express themselves both visually and through the written language.
Sketchbooks in the Art room incorporate vocabulary, writing and reading into daily lessons. This provides extra practice in the acquisition of the English language.
