My Project
Good day, and thank you for taking the time to read about our yearbook program. My name is Max Frankel, and I have recently begun advising the yearbook at our school. While we do have good access to resources, our DSLR cameras are nearly a decade out of date and are beginning to suffer from technical failures and glitches.
I want to help provide my students with the tools they need to successfully create a beautiful and professional yearbook.
With newer cameras, my students will be able to capture the highest quality images without fear of losing data as a result of deteriorating technology. I want them to be able to tell the best visual story they possibly can.
Our students come from a wide array of backgrounds, though 84% of the student population is black and 7% is Latinx. Many of my yearbook students are college-bound, and working as staff members and editors on this project will make their college applications shine.
My students come from a largely underserved area. Many of them have heard the word "can't" so many times in their lives that even their "cans" become "won'ts." My students struggle with trauma, homelessness, learning disabilities, hunger, and other experiences no young person should have to endure.
Kansas City's public schools exist in a hierarchy. Specialty schools requiring entrance exams, lotteries, or auditions receive most of the prestige and leave the students at the other schools feeling like they are not good enough or not special. I and the other faculty members work daily to combat this mentality. New cameras may not fix educational disparities and injustice, but small steps are better than none at all. Thank you for your consideration.
