Visual Learners and Technology

My students need a printer to produce their creations. Our kids will help edit and laminate their photos to create documentation to share with their families about each classroom project.

My Students

My children start their day jumping in excitement and anticipation, they love school because their classroom is filled with learning that interests them. My preschoolers are beginning their educational journey focusing on play, arts and social emotional learning. They grow and change so quickly in such short periods of time. The students are mixed age 3-5 and mixed abilities, with special education students and typical developing children.

We really focus on social emotional learning and creating a classroom community where the children lead their learning.

The children's interests determine the curriculum and our students are engaged and involved in their learning. The children prove every day that the job of children is to play, and through that play they learn and grow to unimaginable lengths.

My Project

A classroom printer will help our students develop more stunning visuals of their projects. Children love to scan their work and print photos of their process. Together we use these pieces to create boards to reflect on the learning that happens.

Working in a classroom of typical and special needs students means we have a range of verbal abilities in the classroom, and we want to accommodate all children and give them tools to express their learning process.

Preschool children need visuals to help stimulate their language growth. A printer will go a long way to support children to talk about their learning and develop a deeper understanding of how to use technology. Children use a mouse to work on fine motor skills, and the screen helps promote hand-eye coordination. But we want our children to create with the technology as well and take visuals away from their work on the computer that they can talk about to develop language skills.

One example of how this process works is through reflective discussions. One child takes photos of children building in the block area, then they print that photo, in a small group the children look at the photo and discuss their process for building the tower, what worked, what didn't, and then they draw the structure, using the photo as a reference.

With laminating pouches we can reinforce the photo and display the photo, children's drawings and the children's conversation to a board near the block area. Then when children start to build, they discuss their previous attempts, or share with the classroom visitor what they built, they can explain to their parents what they did in school that day. Visuals truly open up the world for preschool children and help them develop language and relationships to others and materials.
