Visual Engagement For Deaf And Hard-of-Hearing Students
My students need visual supports in the classroom, such as an interactive whiteboard system and engaging signs, to support their needs and style of learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students use American Sign Language as their primary language. Few students have full access to full communication at home, meaning that their time at school is crucial.
"The problem is not that the students do not hear.
The problem is that the hearing world does not listen." Rev. Jesse Jackson
My students are fourth and fifth graders at a Title I school in East LA. They are bused in up to two hours to our school from all over LA in order to provide full support and access in our "Total Communication" program. Their access to technology has been less than adequate, due to limited access to outdated resources. I have a Smart Board in my classroom that does not work. It has reduced my ability to use technology in the classroom. The students need to be able to simultaneously see me signing and the academic content being discussed. My students enjoy soccer, baseball, basketball, movies, art, drama, music, hiking, and socializing. They are a small, but tight-knit group of students who love coming to school where they have full communication.
My Project
My students will use the interactive white board system to engage their learning on a new level. Our old Smart Board has been out of operation for three years. With this system, we can use technology with the students on a daily basis. Visual access is required for success. Integrating technology with visual support allows the students to interact in the way they learn best while becoming familiar with new technology.
My class struggles to keep up with the rapid development of technology with limited access.
Our funding can't maintain working technology. I want them to be able to engage with the world around them. For students who are struggling to catch up academically due to language delays, interactive and technology based tools help to make the learning process accessible and fun. The interactive white board system bring them a step further into the 21st century!
My students also need visual cues to gain or redirect their attention. "1-2-3, eyes on me" does not work with all of my deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Typically, I flash the lights to get their attention. With a board that connects remotely with lights, I can become more efficient and less disruptive in using lighting cues to gain my students' attention.
