My Project
It is my pleasure to provide speech-language services to elementary aged students in East New York, Brooklyn. My students are between the ages of 5-10 and they each demonstrate challenges in one or more of the following areas: phonological awareness, reading comprehension, and social-emotional skills. My goal is to help my students communicate their wants and needs and how to appropriately respond to social situations. This will help them build foundational skills that they can apply across their day-to-day task. Given that each of my students exhibit a spectrum of strengths and needs I want to seek creative ways to support and develop their individualized communicative abilities. Visual aids are a great asset in supporting our students with language, social and emotional challenges. It helps them express ideas, understand and/or expand on new vocabulary. Some of our students demonstrate their communicative strengths by pointing at visuals while others learn and understand what is being communicated to them when visual displays are presented to them. My goal is to utilize more colorful visuals in the therapy room to help my students with their receptive language (e.g., following directions, answering Wh questions, making inferences), expressive language (e.g., photos to expand on vocabulary) and social skills (e.g., visual model of classroom routines, demonstrations on behavioral expectations in different social settings, token boards). To help prepare us for this coming school year, we are asking for your help in purchasing a colored printer, printing paper, a laminator, laminating sheets, and velcro for our therapy room. These tools will help us design visual charts and activities. It will also help make our daily activities fun, interactive, personalized and engaging for our students.
