My Students

How many times has your teacher asked you at the beginning of the school year to stand up and tell the class something about yourself? What if you were unable to communicate your ideas?

This school year I will be working with students who have Mild Autism, ranging from grades third through fifth.

In working with this population, every student with Autism is different; you have to find out their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. There needs to be consistency and structured activities that are predictable. Students with Autism tend to have difficulty with social and communication development. My students attend a Title 1 public school, K-5 (where the students are mainstreamed within the general education classes for certain subjects throughout the day).

My Project

I am asking for a Flip Video camcorder to utilize in my classroom. Having experience in working with technology these past years, I try to integrate different programs within the curriculum to enhance instruction; ensuring that all modalities are addressed (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) when working with children with special needs. Since I'll be working with a new population, I would like to focus on communication skills (one area of deficiency) known with students who have Autism. With this in mind, I will incorporate the use of the video camera to engage the children in presenting information about themselves and allow them to transfer their video clips into a computer program in which they will be able to add graphics, transitions, and dictation.

Living in a society where technology is becoming the NEW ERA, we know that the use of cameras, computers, and games capture the interest of our students and motivate them in many different areas.

Incorporating this into the classroom, I believe that my students will be more engaged in the lesson and will want to communicate their ideas which may have been difficult for them to do before.
