Visionary Fiction: Reading and Writing Stories for Change

My students need 3 class sets of this book Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements . We are going to work on reading and writing stories to change the world. One of my goals is to create community and voice.

My Students

My students will all be freshmen in a Freshmen Academy. We are beginning the program next year, so it the perfect opportunity to update the curriculum to reflect the times in which we live and the world in which our freshmen reside. They need a strong community in order to be truly successful.

Our schools is very diverse.

We have 60% free and reduced lunch. Our city has high unemployment and we have many students who feel disenfranchised from the educational world. They have a lot of physical needs but they also yearn for a system that respects their background and the place from which they come.

My Project

We will be using the books as a model for learning about writing, reading, and analysis of literature. This book will give students a look into the lives of people who are too often overlooked in our regular curriculum. Students will see themselves represented and hopefully feel inspired to write stories of their own.

I love this idea and this movement of creating solutions for problems in society instead of just complaining.

Much of the current curriculum does not represent our kids and they need to see themselves, their families, their communities in our literature.
