My Students
My incredible students in lower Manhattan come from all five boroughs, from various cultural identities, and from various economic backgrounds. Nearly half of my students quality for free/reduced lunch, one quarter of my students have IEPS, and one tenth of my students are ELL.
I believe that students learn best when provided with an authentic learning experience that enables them to construct their own meaning, author their own inquiry, and develop critical thinking skills.
Students must build their researcher identity.
My Project
Visible Thinking about the research enables students to investigate the topic, interpret the facts, and discern the meaning. The Post-its are a tool for students to re-read their notes and record the central idea(s) of the text or add their own thinking which can be transferred across pages and units. The index cards allow the students to create pictographs with strong powerful writing for a classroom timeline.
The goal is for students to create meaning in order to teach others about their research.
These materials are essential for students to build their own researcher identity in an community of learners.
