My Students

A picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true in band class, where many abstract concepts are taught to 50 students at a time!

We are a wonderfully diverse middle school in an urban area.

The instrumental music program serves over 250 students each year. The majority of these children enter the music program having never played a band or orchestra instrument. The students in our band and orchestra program are truly exceptional and give willingly of their time and talents. Last semester an unprecedented 43 of our students participated in the All-County Music Festival and our 92-piece Symphonic Band competed successfully at state and performed at the local community college. All of this success did not come easy. The students worked together, not only through daily practice, but also local advocacy, fundraising and service to our school and community. Our students are of the highest moral character and those who have been fortunate to have been touched by their resounding spirit and beautiful music would attest!

My Project

The 21st Century classroom has become synonymous with the integration of technology. In September of 2010 I decided that my antiquated music classroom, adorned with only a chalkboard, was in need of a serious makeover. Through the kindness and generosity of many donors on this site, we received a new projector and screen in March of 2011. Since then, I have used PowerPoint and video clips to enhance music instruction. Over the summer, I attended a technology workshop for teachers where I learned of the many uses for a document camera in a music class. Since I have about 50 students in each of my classes, it is often difficult to teach abstract concepts, such as score study and fingerings. With the help of a document camera, I will be able to photograph scores to show students how each individual part combines to create a balanced sound. I can also use it to show fingerings, bow placement and a wide range of musical examples as well as related art and literature.

Over the past few years donors have helped turn a lifeless, obsolete rehearsal space into a classroom reverberating with energy and spirit.

Our BudgetSMART Technology grant last year helped us to enter the 21st Century. Now, through the fulfillment of our Visualizing Vivacious MUSIC grant, we will be able to forge ahead and use up-to-date technology to elicit better student response and understanding.
