My students are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and even deaf-blind. My campus serves as the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in our area.
Students are bused in from surrounding school districts to receive our specialized program services such as deaf education teachers, VI teachers, speech pathology, audiology, and intervener services.
My students are very unique in that they are very visual and tactile learners. They learn best when they’re able to participate in activities that will help build skills that they’ll use in real life.
My Project
I am excited for the opportunity to attend SXSWedu and the Mental Health Symposium for Deaf/Deafblind Youth (both online this year due to COVID). SXSWedu is one of my favorite professional development events! I learn SO much about educational apps, websites, and best practices in education from the best of the best!
My students will benefit from my learning because I always come back from the event with a million cool ideas to implement in the classroom.
For example, I learned about Nearpod.com one year from a session and my my students use it daily in our classroom! It's so fun and engaging. I'm able to target specific IEP goals so easily while the students have FUN!
The Mental Health Symposium for Deaf/Deafblind Youth is a wonderful way for me to learn tips and tricks from mental health professionals on how I can better serve my students. We are all struggling with COVID; this year has been especially hard on my students. I would love to learn strategies on how to help my students with coping with so much change in the world.
