Virtual Students Need Books at Home

Help me give my students two chapter books to read along with me virtually during the Covid-19 school closure.

My Students

My students live in a town on the outskirts of Charlotte, North Carolina, called Huntersville. They are in second grade. I have students dealing with hunger, homelessness, broken homes, special education needs, retention, and more. But you would never guess this seeing their smiles and open hearts.

Even with the all the challenges my students face, they come to school everyday trying to make the world a better place.

Without prompting, I've had students this year asking how we can invent better electric cars, clean the oceans, get school buildings for kids in other countries, and feed the poor. Daily, I see their compassion between each other as they help friends who lose or forget things, carry things for each other, explain hard problems to their friends, and hold hands or hug those who are upset.

Everyday, I feel challenged to meet the needs of my students, but now more than ever, I feel it as a burden on my heart. Now that my students are at home alone, I want to be able to reach each of them.

My Project

I can conduct two 3 week long virtual units using these 2 extraordinary stories - that is almost 30 daily reading lessons. These two classic children's books have been loved for years by many students. Putting them in the hands of my students will allow them to follow along with me while I read aloud to them virtually. It will also allow them to practice going back to find answers within the text which is a critical skill to being able to prepare for third grade. Finally, with the physical text, students can practice reading aloud to family members during the school closure to improve their fluency on grade level stories.
