Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are imaginative and fun-loving kids. They come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community. A large number of them are living in shelters or small crowded apartments. They depend of on community resources and food pantries to get meals. Many have older and younger siblings that are learning online as well. Some have parents that are in continuing education classes to further their education. There are also children of essential workers and their parents are not home during the day to assist them.

As the librarian, I work with students of all ages and abilities.

It's difficult for the young students to learn online. Many depend on whatever books and materials they have at home. Despite the hardships they are facing with school being closed, they are eager learners.

My Project

I never imagined that I would find myself remotely teaching from home and that my scholars would be learning new material through video conferencing calls and recorded home videos. We are charging forward and looking at it as a learning opportunity for all! When we left the building we thought we would be back soon. Never did I realize that we would be teaching from home for several months. I did not bring much with me. When I meet with the young classes, we try to make it as interactive as possible. We sing songs. share stories and ideas, and talk about our experiences. We view an electronic book, and I share the screen of the book in our video conference. It's fun but it's not the same as an interactive read aloud where I am actually holding a book and reading it aloud to them

The selected titles in the list are award-winning childhood read-aloud favorites.

They are also suggested titles to go along with the upcoming units of study. The list also includes puppets and storytelling tools that I can use during Google Meet to make the learning as interactive as possible with my youngest prekindergarten and kindergarten scholars. I will also be able to use it with future classes in the library for shared class reading and read-alouds on the carpet. The storytelling tools and puppets could be used back in the library as well.
